Common Brake Issues

An automotive braking system is the single most important factor when it comes to your personal safety while operating a motor vehicle. Over time, brakes naturally wear down as a normal process of applying your brakes while driving. There are three primary components that make up your vehicle’s braking system.

• Pads or Shoes
• Rotors or Drums
• Calipers

Pads & Rotors

The photo below illustrates the difference between a good and bad brake rotor and pad. Notice the wear marks and grooves in the rotor and pad on the right which have been worn down over time causing damage to the surfaces. This is the most common source of brake noise. The damage can cause squeaking, grinding, vibration, pulsing and safety issues.

Brake Calipers

Think of the brake caliper as the muscle that applies pressure to both sides of the rotor to slow or stop the vehicle. Brake pads are fitted inside the caliper and are pressed together to create friction as you apply the brake pedal.

Brake calipers are powered by hydraulic lines and fluid that slide pistons in and out as you apply your brakes. Over time, calipers can fail due to rust or corrosion in or around the piston cylinder. If the pistons can’t move freely, your brakes can fail. If your calipers show corrosion or don’t move smoothly they should be replaced.

What We Do

Our well-trained brake technicians are specialized in brake repair and are certified to work on most makes and models. On arrival, our tech will perform a visual inspection to verify we can identify issues before we start replacing parts. We lift one side of the axel using a floor jack, properly position safety supports under the frame, remove the tire & wheel assembly, and inspect the brake pads, rotors, and calipers. We then provide you with a condition report before we start any work.

We bring all brake components for your specific year, make, model, and trim. That way, if we find parts not on the original work order that need attention, we can advise you so you can make an informed decision on which parts you wish to replace then & there.

Our technicians are not sales reps and will not attempt to upsell you on repairs you don’t need. The tech will only advise you on the condition of your brakes so you can decide what, if any, work you would like us to perform. Our goal is to repair your brakes as quickly, efficiently, affordably, and safely as possible.

In most cases we recommend replacing pads and rotors at the same time. Occasionally, we see rotors that are still in good enough condition to reuse them and only replace the brake pads. If we see that your rotors are reusable, we will mention this in our inspection report so you can decide whether you wish to replace pads and rotors together or install new pads only and reinstall your existing rotors.

However, keep in mind that our 6-month warranty applies only to new pads and rotors that have been installed at the same time. New pads installed on old rotors are not warrantied because brake pads typically wear down faster on rotor surfaces that are not completely smooth.

Installation Process

Once we have confirmed your decision about which components you wish to replace we will begin the process of installing your new brake parts. We install pads, rotors, and calipers depending on which you have approved. It takes about an hour to complete one axel. We schedule your appointment for a two-hour window to allow for any communication or changes.

After we complete the parts installation our tech will check your brake fluid levels and top off any additional fluid per OE manufacturer specification. To do this we will need the car to be unlocked so we can open the hood.

If we are installing only pads and/or rotors there is no need to drive the vehicle for testing purposes. However, if we replace the calipers we will need to bleed the brake lines and test drive the vehicle to ensure the brake hydraulics are working properly before you drive the vehicle.
